Nintendo played to the general mass media rather than the specific game media. No where could this be more seen than in the two Associated Press articles on the event. The game writer ridiculed Nintendo. The general features writer praised it.
Basically, Nintendo wants to broaden the audience and is playing a different game. And it is winning the sales battle -- which makes others upset.
