Something like "2007 was the year of the hardcore gamer, 2008 of the casual gamer" and then acted as if they didn't know anything about Nintendo's plans for 2009. They didn't even mention WM+, and said "2009 won't be a year of the Wii".

Hey, don't you believe in tradition. They were wrong about it in 2007. They were wrong about it in 2008. Why do you expect them to be right about 2009?
They are half right. In a few years, some Wii users will be ready for more story, more time commitment, better graphics but I very seriously doubt that they will get those things by turning their back on the philosophy and control system that got them on board. They will undoubtably look to the Wii2 to provide both.
