sony doesn't exactly pay for them they work with the publisher to create some kind of friendship, and if the games do well they buy the whole studio later.

 

Yeah... Sony gets to publish WKC for free because they're "Freinds".

Nevermind plenty of publishing houses would pay for that right.

So they changed their buisness practices back during the PS1 days then?

When they payed for FF7 and 3 other Square RPGS.  (Final Fantasy Tactics and 2 others.... they got right of first refusual in those 3 when they bought 7 and advertised it heavily.)
