A surge protector is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. A surge protector attempts to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold.

That doesn't mean you don't need surge protectors. A surge can be caused by a number of things among them: use of high power electrical devices like Air Conditioning and refrigerators, faulty wiring, downed power lines, lightning, etc. Especially in the summer when the energy grid takes a toll I've seen the transformer blow down the block (I live near a series of huge transmission lines) and if I didn't have a network of surge protectors who knows what would happen to my equipment. Honestly I have very basic models and after seeing what happend at my friends' place I really need to upgrade at least to something more protective.
