If you buy GHWT with instruments you can play all the wii GH games, as well as Rock Band 2 (but not the track packs or RB1)
If you have and Wii RB with instruments, you can only play the RB games.
Best bet is to but the band kit for GH:WT and add RB2 game only.
Both games use a standard USB microphone.
