I had fun with it. My thumbs hurt sometimes though.
I had the transfer pack, and Mario Tennis 64, so I could transfer my character to the N64 cartridge, and use him there, and anything he did in there got me experience points, which I could transfer back to the GBC cartridge. I found that cool (and helpful in training little "EZ").
Maybe you can ask him if you can give the game a try for like 10 minutes or something, and see if you like it?
