You seem to be missing the point.  Why are some FF games part of the "numbered" series, when they so greatly deviate from all the games in that series that have come before?  What makes them deserving of this "numbered" status?  Is the assignment thereof not arbitrary?  As for Mario, those games stopped having a consecutive number system at SMB3, which was twenty years ago.
