I totally agree that Nintendo really launched that tech into mainstream and exploited it like nobody ever before and being first and not standing on its laurels but furtherly developing the idea, it will be difficult to competitors to catch up, my post was just to confirm that unless they blatantly copy Wiimote, competitors should be quite safe on the patents side (and this was confirmed by Nintendo itself).
Ah, just for completeness sake, prior art for 6-D accelerometers+gyroscopes sensing existed for years in some fields of engineering, for example robotics and automation, in robotics it's often used a piezo based force sensing wrist too...
This said, for competitors there's still the big problem of inventing a controller at least as good as the next improved Wiimote, but different
