Why is realistic graphics so important?

Its like movies. You can make cartoon graphics, cg animations etc. but in the end a movie is about telling a story. And since stories normally take place in the real world, movies and games will normally use a realistic look. That works much better in transporting the story.
I don't find anything "boring" about it. Nothing is more beautiful and awesome than reality. It simply depends on where you look. What's so great about blue hair in anime movies.

Besides "ANYTHING" is overrated. Visual styles as in SinCity or 300 are cool, but it is no wonder that some of the more "creative" games have bad sales. Its hard to relate to them.

 

Yes, I fully agree, nothing is more beautiful than the grays and browns all displayed in glorious 32-bits.....
