Hogwash my ass. Sony knew before they started making the console that there were going to be losses given the high manufacturing costs. They were prepared to take the losses to improve the stature of Bluray and they have done just that. Realize the reality or not, but Sony only over-priced their console to promote Blu-ray. There ultimate goal with the PS3 was that bluray is successful and they know that is a long term prospect. They even went to lengths to deny any games on their system that wasn't Blu-ray because they want to promote the format, simple as that.

Afterall, Sony could have just made a cheap upgrade from the PS2 and continue to sell consoles out the ass but they wanted to expand, they want to bring Blu-ray into power and they are using their gaming divison to do just that. I don't agree with the strategy because I am a gamer but clearly Sony are more concerned with other matters then gaming right now.

Whether we gamers want to accept it or not, the PS3 is not a console solely designed for gaming. It was built to fullfil other objectives as well.

Yes hogwash. You wrote "investments are not profitable short term." This is completely false and hogwash.

Sony's own loss estimates are far higher today than their original estimates of a year ago. They never intended for the losses to be so huge. Yes they did plan for a loss, but it got out of control and their costs spiraled upwards. That's one of the main reasons Kutaragi is gone. He spent way, way too much money and didn't consider the possibility of the PS3 not selling as well as the PS2.
