Problem is if Sony are losing/lost $3Billion on the PS3 in just 2 years will they drop the price and lose even more money? At a time when profits were down 76%? When the company shares have fallen to the lowest on record? (Fell from 60p to just under 13p), when they just had to sack 16000 people (5th of their workforce)? when they have had to sell off factories to cut costs? etc.. etc..
See the reality is they can't cut the cost without losing even more money. I don't think were be seeing a PS3 price cut for a long long time. Holidays 09 maybe at the earliest. Sony are not in business to keep fanboys happy they are in business to make money.
