They didn't make up anything in that article that I saw and yes, Sony was a part of expanding the market in the last generation. They (With help from 3rd parties too) introduced some very popular "Casual" games in that generation that pushed some people who did not play video games into buying a system for those casual games.
I see nothing wrong with that statement one bit. Of course the wii has taken that to the next step with even more casual games and the motion controller. But the fact is, games like singstar, Guitar Hero, buzz, etc paved the way towards the casual gamer.
My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.
