Sony largely expanded the market by simply keeping up w/ gamers as they got older. Their target audience was 20-30 something males who would have been gamers in their teens. They weren't going after seniors and soccer moms.

It's true... Sony marketed for the 19 - 30.  Last gen the average gamer age was 25 - 35yr male.  It is changing now but I think it will continue to grow with the similar age group.  I was 20 when I got my ps1 :) and being a gamer since I was 7 or so It becomes apart of your everyday life.  Same as the "Internets" - G.W.Bush j/ks

That's exactly what I wanted to point out:  Nintendo created the base of the video game players with the NES, mostly children from 4 to 12.  Then, with time, you know, children grow ^^  So with the SNES/Genesis generation there was a bit more people to play.  Then, when the PS1 went out, it was almost 10 years after the NES, which means that the group that started on the NES was now 14-22, and the group that was now 4-12 was also playing video games, mostly because of the way Nintendo implanted games in the society.  So basically (Easy math, no real calculation), the market doubled, which is almost true when you look at the numbers.

Sony did not expand the market, it just was smart enough to play the cool factor and reach for the group that was now 14-22, and this was important because these players were the oldest generation, the first one that would reach adult status and have kids, which would now be playing on Playstation console since their parents had made the switch from Nintendo to Sony with the PS1.  It worked pretty well for the PS2, on the news, you could even hear Playstation = Games instead of the Nintendo = Games.  Sony had total control on the market.......but then the Wii was^^  (And maybe more important, Sony decided to release a console at 600$US, probably forgetting that it was supposed to be a video game machine and that for one fan that is ready to spend that amount of money, there are 10 that are not)
