Hey, to be completely fair, it happened to the gamecube, and most non-winning consoles before this generation.

 

The Gamecube sold poorly from the beginning despite launching at mass market price point and as the cheapest console on the market throughout the generation, so it was a general lack of consumer demand for the product.

This is not the case with the PS3. It's just the most expensive console on the market during bad economic times. A PS3 price cut would have a far greater impact than the Gamecube price cuts.
