First off: Nintendo defines 'core' as someone who plays often. Animal Crossing in their mind, rightly so, is core. Even some Wii Sports only players could be core if they play it all the time.
Secondly: He didn't say 'core' games were being announced. He said games 'we'd like to hear' (or some such statement). Coming from Nintendo that could be anything at all because who is 'we' and as far as they are concerned we'll love all their games anyway no matter what it is.
Having said that I think their will be some classic Nintendo IP(s) announced to please the Nintendo loyalists and avoid the massive internet backlash. Probably Pikmin 3 and Red Steel 2.
