The biggest thing that's hurt Sony this generation is the price of the PS3, which is largely due to Sony's other divisions meddling in SCE's affairs.
SCE would have never put Blu-Ray or the Cell processor in the PS3 if they weren't forced to because of the stakes that the other divisions had in those technologies. Had it not been for this, we'd have seen a $300 PS3 at launch.
