People buying core games know what they want and ask for it specifically, so they don't get displayed as often (even happens at Best Buy and GameStop), so for Wii and DS the display games are basically bait to get rid of the shovelware they can't get rid of otherwise.
Retailers have played a larger role in certain Wii titles not selling well right out of the gate than people think. Zack & Wiki is the famous example, most retailers didn't have the game even in their system let alone in stock. The first Phoenix Wright games on DS too.
