I didn't read the whole thing yet, but I would like to point out that last gen had the beginnings of the genre divide. When the Xbox came out, it was marketed towards what we consider hardcore today. The PS2 managed to rope in the casuals, the only difference was the PS2 had a stranglehold on 3rd party support before the original Xbox could really get going.
