it was closer in America then 20 million and Sega had a lead for at least a few years before Nintendo blew them out of the water. Problem for Sega is they couldn't break into the Japanese market. Back in the early 90's japan was the second biggest market and very close to north America in total sales of hardware and software.

Being more of a Japanese-esque gamer than a Western one, I can understand why...

Kudos to Sega for that gen though.
