I understand what you're saying, but there have been joysticks like that for decades. Anolog is proportional. Move it a little, and the object (video game character, remote control car or plane, etc.) moves slowly, and increases proportionaly with the distance you move the control. The N64 was not the first to do this. The Atari 5200 definitely did this. The SNES did not (don't know about the origional NES), though it very well could have. I did not like directional pads when they came out, and obviously they didn't last long.
