How is that surprising? The games aren't selling the console, the controller is. So once it gets old, sales go down.
How could it be the games if the games are basically the same available for the gamecube.
Replace "controller" with the word "brand" and "gamecube" with "PS2".
What you get is an adequate description of the PS3 and why it's selling.
