I didn't read 5 pages of posting but to answer your question op..
I believe they wanted to recreate the success of the ps2 by having everyone upgrade media to a ps3. The ability to play dvds was a great asset to the ps2 in the early years, this time though shit ill take streaming hd videos over blue ray. :)
