It's easy to explain why shootan gaems are so successful: they produce a rush of aggression hormones that's difficult to match without actually going out and getting in a fight yourself. Put that in the hands of the adolescent male "hardcore gamer" market, and you've got a guaranteed hit, more so if you can add some sex hormones to the mix. Stick in multiplayer for the domination instinct and you've got the perfect trifecta for controlling a market that hasn't yet mastered control of the R-complex.

This, ultimately, is why games like No More Heroes and Mirror's Edge fail, and why MadWorld will do the same: when you don't go for generic-but-gritty photorealism in your graphics, you just can't just produce the kind of rush that fans of these games crave. The market realizes this, and so sales inevitably fall short.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
