I'm kind of torn on set top boxes. They are really cool ideas, but consumers seem to be indifferent towards them, and you are often pretty limited in what you can do with them.
I would totally be onboard with set top boxes if they were more like the PS3 in that you could use them as a private media server. I need to be able to plug in an external drive and be able to transfer data directly to the set top box or stream media to it from my computer (preferably both). And then obviously it needs to have robust codec support so that it can play whatever I transfer to it.
Until that happens, I remain off the bandwagon for set top boxes.
