First, the box is "free". You buy 25 movie rentals for $100 and Blockbuster gives you yet another box to perch on the tower atop your television. Second, there's no subscription fee -- movies will start $2 a pop, and you'll have 30 days to watch them. Once you start watching, you have to finish up within 24 hours. This is similar to the model Apple uses for iTunes movie rentals.

Of course, Blockbuster's online offering is much smaller than that of Netflix, but as Ars Technica points out, the movies it does have are truly outstanding. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, anyone?

 

Maybe this will work.  Cause I can't watch Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 thorugh Netflix/Xbox360.

But i wonder how many customers they lost last week.

I'm kind of torn on set top boxes. They are really cool ideas, but consumers seem to be indifferent towards them, and you are often pretty limited in what you can do with them.

I would totally be onboard with set top boxes if they were more like the PS3 in that you could use them as a private media server. I need to be able to plug in an external drive and be able to transfer data directly to the set top box or stream media to it from my computer (preferably both). And then obviously it needs to have robust codec support so that it can play whatever I transfer to it.

Until that happens, I remain off the bandwagon for set top boxes.

The only problem I have with the Netflix instant watch, is that about 80% of what they offer on instant watch is all shit that I would pass on anyhow.

That being said, it makes you wonder why Blockbuster doesn't jump on the Sony bandwagon and offer a similiar service for the PS3.

So like AppleTV, but good.

The selection is great for some of the set top boxes, but I can pirate what they are offering pretty easily, so there is no point for me to buy a set top box unless it offers some other really cool features.

Oh, I don't pirate, that explains it. I would probably just get the Netflix one because it is no extra charge (other than the box). The blockbuster one isn't bad if you like ppv or don't mind paying more for HD, I watch too many movies though.
