Why not 8.10?

I don't remember the differences between installing stuff in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

8.04 was the first release to install with almost no effort on my notebook, while Xubuntu 7.10 was quite difficult, as it didn' recognize graphics card and wi-fi module. Right now 8.04 is still doing fine, so I'll wait when I'll build my new desktop to evaluate upgrading on the notebook too.

About installers, Kubuntu by default uses Adept instead of Synaptic, but they are both front-end for apt, so you can use whichever you like. Each one has its pro's and con's, Adept is maybe simpler, but Synaptic has some nice features I like, like an immediate way to see suggested and related packets users may want to install together with the packet chosen, and it has a very neat and easy tool for dist upgrade.
