I could actually see that being true for a lot of times in this year (not at the times where games like MGS4 or GTA4 released obviously), it did hit at the same time as games with an already established userbase got high quality sequels.
That being said, this is definetly damage control, although I don't know how well LBP perfomed according to their expectations. But even so, there is still damage control to be done towards those who expected more from LBP.
