The battle takes place in the Western markets, Japan will be nearly a non issue even though the PS3 will win this region obviously. But since Japanese support for both consoles will most likely dry up due to the Wii's success, hardware sales for the 360 and PS3 in Nippon will drop to insignificant amounts for the most part of the rest of this generation. The 360 and PS3 share the majority of their games, but Microsoft seems to have the slightly more important exclusives for the Western markets. That however is pretty much offset by Sony's stronger brand recognition in continental Europe. So the momentum between the two systems will mostly shift due to pricecuts and rarely due to a game release. If we assume that the PS3 beats the 360 in Japan by an additional two million by the end of its lifetime, that still leaves the 360 with a four million lead in the Western markets and as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it looks unlikely that the PS3 could overcome this. The lifespans of both systems will end at pretty much the same time, because they are both dependent on each other in terms of third party releases, so the supposed advantage of a longer lifespan for the PS3 is unrealistic. |
Great post.
