The main point of bringing up the DS was to show that Nintendo is willing to put products on the market just to get people to rebuy.
What purpose could a WiiHD serve? Right now Wii is not getting its share of the multi-plat titles. (Note this does not read third party.) A WiiHD could change that. I know it is too late, but imagine a Nintendo anouncement that FF13 would be on the Wii in Japan (just trying to demonstrate a point, I know it is impossible.)
Who would having a new Wii anger? Not the new casuals, they wouldn't really care. Either they wouldn't upgrade (most likely) or they are used to Ipod generations and five years would seem long. As for the core, it could prevent some of them from becoming two-console owners for third parties.
