^ See now that is something I have not encountered among my studies, limited as they are. They were probably persecuted the most yes, but back then atheism barely even existed, and people who were never spoke about it. It was the exact same as the time when Christianity was prohibited in the Roman empire, people just hid that fact, others hid behind Deism.
On another note, while deism was attacked it was never absolutely discounted as a relgion at all, this is all thanks to the Protestant Reformation. The group that gained the least from the Reformation were the agnostics/atheists. They gained nothing, but they did grow in numbers.
