That is how it mere exposure works.
Take for example this study that was done.
4 girls went to a class of 200 people, auditorium style.
Out of 20 classes, 1 girl went 5 times, 1 girl went 10 times, and one girl went 15 times, and one went 20 times.
These girls were confederates, or, people working under for the study.
At the end of the semester every member in the class was asked to rate 4 girls based on looks, approachability, intelligence, and popularity.
The four girls they were asked to rate were not the four girls who went to the classes, but similarly looking people.
The results lined up like a row of ducks. Lookalikes of those who attended more were judged higher in every category than ones that were there less.
The key in this study was that the class was out of 200 people, its not the kind of thing where you really get a good look at anyone.
Of course under mere exposure, the exposure levels should remain between 10-20 times. If it exceeds that it could "put off" the target by annoying them, or not make any more difference at all. That is why teasers like these are used where they barely showed anything.
