It was far better than I expected, and I hated every other GTA before it. They casualized the game, and took most of the bloat out of it, and I, along with millions and millions of fans and reviewers, loved the hell out of it.

The people you're talking about, the small internet anti GTAIV community, is probably about 10k people max, and most of them probably never even played it, and are just bitter than it keeps certain other games from their supposed proper spot as GotY.

I gave it a 9.5 out of 10 when it came out, and I stand by it.

FIne but for us long time GTA 4 fans it was like aborting everything good about GTA SA.

It was an awful game.....even trophies aren't making me replay it!

A GTA was meant to last a whole gen......I played GTA SA upto a year after its release.....hell even after I got a PS3 I continued to play GTA SA....

but with GTA 4 that never happened..

 

I just saw it as a good 20 hour experience with streamlined gameplay, and an actual linear point to the game. The narrative really shown brightly. The city felt alive and the characters were enjoyable and well hashed out. The gameplay was much more streamline and natural, especially the gunplay. It got a little sucky about 20 hours in(a little too much like the previous games), but the early game was magnificant, unlike other GTA's, which I could never play for more than 4 or 5 hours before I got sick of them.
