Also, I think PS3's and 360's push (Singstar, Buzz, LBP, We're in the movies, uno etc) for games with a larger demographic shows that it's not pandering to creepy adolescent males.

 

The reason the number of consoles has been higher the past two generations (over ones before it) is because the aging gamer population has had the income to afford multiple consoles, combined with the fact that Sony's existing distribution system allowed it to easily enter markets that had previously been unserved.

 

If you look at the data for the U.S. and Japan, the percentage of households owning a console declined in gen 5 and 6.
