companies like these create about 6-7 different campaigns and then do marketing research on test subjects through a variety of subtlety like:
A group will invite people to a "pilot preview" where they can win up to $$$ in prizes and watch a pilot for a new show. Then they play the show along with commercials to enhance "reality" of the experience. They then give each person a catalog of things they would like to win for the prize and see how many people pick the products that were in the ads.
They move the ads around in their orders of being seen and try all the different ads and see which groups pick that product the most.
This is done over thousands of people.
These ads are good marketing.
