Hey, Sam, do you use a wireless router or some sort of wireless connection? I think it's better if you get a wired one. I have the Wii Connect from Nyko, and it works perfectly, giving me a great connection.
You just connect it to the USB slot on the Wii, then insert an ethernet cable and BAM, you're connected. It's great, and it's really cheap. About 20 bucks from amazon--16 if you haven't used up your free shipping month they give to new members.
