I got those blu-ray players in my store, they sell fast. Very fast, faster than PS3s. Infact, they have halted every attempt possible at selling the PS3 as a blu-ray player with tons of features. Why should non-gamers pay extra for a console that plays blu-rays and plays games they will never play?

I hate those things.

The answer to your question would be because the PS3 paved the way for a price drop on Blu Ray. Blu Ray got a 16 Million console push just from the PS3 alone, which save Blu Rays ass. It was a sure thing for Sony...just push it in the PS3 hardware and make people pay more for it. Tech people can finally get their hands on an affordable Blu Ray player without the videogames in-store. It's no strings attached for Blu Ray DVD stand alone owners now with pricing. The PS3 is still considered a cheap Blu Ray player. Sooner or later Sony will cut the price of PS3 next year.
