Steam IS the copyright protection mechanism! Sure it doesn't screw up your PC anything like StarForce, for instance, but try playing Half-Life2 without it.


True, but it's not a bad thing.

Anybody afraid of "copyright protection" on Steam is probably just mad they can't pirate.  True, Steam's all about copyright protection, but it's how the system works. 

And I'm pretty sure a demo will be on Steam or direct download later this week...dunno when though.
