Wii Fit had the "Wii series". Mario and Sonic had, well, Mario and Sonic. Shooters are rarely original. Motorstorm was a standard racing game. Big Brain Academy used the Brain Training "hype". Sequels are never new.

But if you want to, you could take a look how many new and original IP:s lately have sold in large numbers, opposed to how many haven't sold in large numbers. Secondly, due to the new audience, it's basically easier to have hit with new IP on DS and Wii.

The fact that the biggest selling game THIS GENERATION (or as you say these days)  IS.  A.  NEW.  IP.

And well....yeah...thats it.
