Although I strongly disagree with Doom, Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark being the pinnacles of the FPS genre prior to Half-Life 2, I must strongly agree that Half-Life 2 is the best FPS ever. A great variety in terms of gameplay and fantastic level design make me occasionally replay Half-Life 2 to this day.
