Well, the cost of living has increased everywhere, it's not just the US.
I'm no expert on the subject, but the UK tends to have a lot more price control than in the US. So prices favour the consumer rather than the corporation. An exmaple of this was a few months ago, when the price of milk was deemed to high in supermarkets, and they were making too much profit. The supermarkets were sued, and the price of milk was lowered.
I believe in the US that it is a lot more of an open market.
