Considering that a platformer, and not a shooter, is the best selling game of all times, I dont think the generalized statement that you made even holds true. Lets face it, Gears 1 was a resounding success for a new IP, which LBP may or may not be, depending on the weeks, or months to come. no need to say stuff like it was going to sell anyways.

Didn't Gears of War have much more advertising on a system with much fewer quality games (at the time) on a system known for being full of shooter fans?

In any case I think we can safely say that LBP's peculiar launch has made LTD predictions based on the first two weeks questionable at best even leaving aside the theories about what model it would resemble more normally.

For the first 1.5 years after the Xbox 360 launch, most people that bought one did so in anticipation for Halo.  Gears 1 came in good timing to satisfy the Halo fans' need for a good shooter.  The first Xbox was all about Halo or modding it.  So it's no surprise to see that the beginning of the 360 lifecycle was similar the the original Xbox.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
