Companys tend to place huge value on brand name, so I guarentee you this thought has been in their heads for a lot longer than it has been in yours. They definately have a very good idea just how much they can afford to lose. And I can guarentee you they have been working constantly to bring down manufacturing costs since before it was released.
You have some good points, but I can't imagine why you would think any of this would be news to Sony.
