You're taking the film too literally. It doesn't matter what device was used to expel the aliens. They're not the point of the movie, anyway.
Regardless, I'll stop defending it now. I'm not trying to change the opinions of those who have already seen the film. I just want those who haven't to give it a proper chance. :)
EDIT: I haven't read the book, but Spielberg's War Of The Worlds was quite disappointing. Not worth seeing, I'd say.
