Here's a quick rundown of SIGNS (damn you Goose!) Don't worry, I'll blank out the spoilers
Oh my goodness, we've been visited by aliens smart enough to travel through space and hover above us in cloaked ships but too stupid to operate a doorknob. But don't worry, God caused your brothers failed career, your wife's death, your son's asma and oh yeah, An alien massacre that kills untold thousands (if not millions), just so your son would survive and you'd get your faith back. Believe in god, he kills thousands of people with Aliens, but your kid lived, so he's compassionate.
