I don't believe in interplanetary space craft visiting us either, but for the sake of argument those lights could very well be part of their propulsion system, or some sort of light radar or some kind of fuel emission. Such a craft, by it's very nature, would contain technologies we haven't even considered.
The real question about UFOs and visitors from outer space is why did The Signs suck so much? And why did it do so well at the box office?
