When you compare third party support on the Wii from 2007 to 2008 you will notice that there was a (fairly) dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of games released. Looking into 2009 there appears to be a larger jump in the quantity of quality titles, and (at this point in time) I don't think that it is unrealistic to say that this trend may continue throughout the Wii's life.
Third parties publishers have not produced that many games for the Wii so far because they were heavily supporting the PS2 and PSP, and they had jumped head first into HD development, and they really didn't have any resources to devote to Wii development. As these publishers have been scaling back on PS2 and PSP development they have been reallocating resources towards the Wii which is starting to show up in the Wii's software line-up.
Had third party publishers planned to "Skip" the Wii, these developers would have been allocated directly to HD projects ... Correct me if I'm wrong but, from what I have seen, it appears that the development teams that are working on HD projects today are (for the most part) the same development teams that were working on games for these systems since before they launched.
