To everyone saying it's because Gears is first-party:
Capcom has made some Zelda games. Has Capcom ever called themselves a Nintendo first-party? I think not.
They said this for a different reason. It may have just been a slip of the tongue, but it's not solely because of the IP.
Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
