PS1 was not doing that great until then Squaresoft announced support for it, and everyone else followed. They were one of the reasons that PS1 was a winning console. That was only due to N64 using cartridge based media.
Square will choose which console suits their development needs for the main FF series. Usually their games will sell no matter which one it is on.
