I think most people simplify this situation to match their views.
The reality is that price comparing the two is not so simple, and different consumers will do it different ways. I don't think anyone has real data on how many consumers think the Xbox is cheaper because of the shelf price (or which model they are comparing) or how many think the prices are comparable or how many think the bluray player makes the ps3 a huge bargain.
Any discussion of how the relative prices are affecting sales is pure supposition.
