lol maybe violence on TV in USA.... but if a developed country in the world is concervative about sex it's definately USA..... I'm not american I just live here for now.... I'm french and US TV is effing prudish lol..... Francehas been the second consumer of jap animation for the past 20+ year and even their it's not a niche (i'm talking about jap anime in general not the extrem genre)..... it's entire generations who grew up around that.... it's part of the culture, it's like sesame street and transformers in USA or the magic school bus or I don't know what else in USA (didn't grew up here).... so if jap animation is not a niche in France I highly doubt that it's a niche in japan especially when they have at least 20 if not a 100 time more animes and title than us in france... I have also IM friends and a lot of online friends in japan plus a friend who did her studies entirely focusing on japanese culture.... and they all admit that animation is a big big big part of their culture like marvel and DC comic books are in USA for some generations.... and I don't see what's wrong with it.... they have an amazingely rich culture that depict in their manga and that allow the genre to be as wide as the cinema is in hollywood if not way more than that..... I would be proud of that...

Look, i'm gonna respond to this once more and i'm done with you. I just graduated from college with a double major in east asian studies/international business 2 days ago, i've been studying Japanese for 5 years, I lived in Japan for 1 year, I've had 2 Japanese girlfriends and one of them couldn't even speak English. I keep a diary in Japanese on mixi, I am going to Japan later this year to start a job. I don't care if you've been watching anime for 100 years, it doesn't tell you about the culture as a whole. The kind of anime that has violence and sex is a small niche. Anime itself is not entirely a niche in Japan because there are a few that are popular to everyone but those are kids (family) shows and light comedies. You can watch stuff like Doraemon or Crayon Shin-chan on TV every day, but you can't watch most of the anime you are probably watching. Some stuff like Princess Mononoke are huge, but most of the anime movies are nothing more than a niche.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
